I had the privilege of presenting Brian’s scholarship to Matthew at the Huskie Dual Meet on Friday, November 29th. This was my second time attending this incredible event, and it was inspiring to witness the remarkable team that Coach Daniel and Shane Bradley have built.
Maya Philips, the award's first recipient, has grown immensely since I first saw her compete. Her athleticism and calm, thoughtful approach left me in awe. Sierra Mullen, last year’s recipient, showcased the same grit and determination that continue to set her apart. Although they don’t know me personally, I couldn’t help but feel proud of their progress and achievements.
Then there was Matthew, stepping onto the mat with such energy, confidence, and enthusiasm. Watching him in action was a true highlight. All three athletes won their matches that night, but beyond the victories, they are gaining invaluable life lessons that will stay with them for years to come.
It's difficult being an athlete and a student, and your thoughtful donation to Brian's scholarship helps burden a bit of this load. I want to share with you what this scholarship means to Matthew:
Thank you for presenting me with the Brian Lee Memorial Scholarship. I am honored to receive a scholarship that honors an unforgettable individual and champion wrestler like Brian Lee.
I am fortunate to have been raised in a family with long roots in the Saskatoon wrestling community. My father was a Huskie wrestling teammate of Brian's brother Mark. Although a generation younger, my father remembers Brian fondly and shared stories with me of his smooth wrestling style, technique and his life adventures. Listening and learning about Brian's legacy was inspiring. I am in awe of what he accomplished during his life, and it has certainly left an impression on me. Although Brian was an Aden Bowman Bear and I was an Evan Hardy Soul, both of us graduated from Saskatoon Public Schools and went on to join the Huskies. I hope that I can be as fearless on the wrestling mat as Brian was in life.
This scholarship opportunity has spurred newfound courage inside me and fueled my urge to get up and train as hard as possible. I appreciate the opportunity that has been placed on the roadway that is my academic and athletic life. I am proud to be able to represent this legacy, and I want to thank you from the deepest depths of my heart.
Thank you for the opportunity to be a Brian Lee Scholarship recipient.
Matthew Rhys Yong
As much as this scholarship was created to honor Brian, it's also about the athletes it supports. The fund is an endowment, so the award is based on the interest earned, ensuring its longevity for generations to come. I have made a personal commitment to donate $1,000 to the fund every year to help with its growth. I hope you too, see the value and the opportunities generated by the fund and will contribute to its success.
Till next year,
Clara
